It's been a long time coming in my search for the perfect coffee creamer. Which, this one is stil by no means perfect, but it is delicious. Recently, my taste buds have changed. Because in the past couple years I've been eating more organic foods, my body has started to recognize what's real vs what's fake, and my coffee creamers were no exception.
We shop at Trader Joes, and I love it with all my heart. But, their coffee creamers are kind of the worst. First, they're lactose free, so obviously there has to be some sort of chemical process to make it a creamy creamer. And, second, the ingredients are frightening. I used to trust anything I bought from Trader Joes because I thought everything they sold had good ingredients, but I was wrong.
Here's a list of the ingredients:
filtered water, cane sugar, soybean oil and/or sunflower oil and/or safflower oil, sodium caseinate (a milk derivative), dipotassium phosphate, soy lecithin, mono and diglycerides (vegetable), natural vanilla flavor, titanium dioxide (color), natural flavor, carrageenan.
I'm not okay with consuming artificial colors, carrageenan, soy lecithin, "milk derivative"?? Gross, no wonder it tastes so fake.
So, I tried Coffee Mate's Natural Bliss creamer, and it was better for a while, although such a hassle because TJ's doesn't carry it and I'd have to go to a different grocery store to get it.
Ingredients: Nonfat milk, heavy cream, sugar, natural flavor.
Not too bad, until you get to the natural flavor. And that's where the fake taste comes from. Read this article on the truth of "natural" flavors.
One of my (many) goals this year is to care even more about what I put in and on my body.
So all that to say, if I couldn't find the perfect creamer, I was going to make my own. And now I'm going to share it with you.
1 cup organic half & half
1 cup organic heavy whipping cream
2-4 T sugar (depending on how sweet you like it, I put 3)
2 tsp organic vanilla extract
organic cinnamon (optional)
Also, half & half and whipping cream can easily be replaced by almond milk, cashew milk, etc.
On medium heat, mix half & half, heavy whipping cream, sugar, and vanilla extract. Add a dash of cinnamon, if you like as well.
Stir until the sugar is dissolved and everything is mixed.
Pour into container of your choice (I used a mason jar). Cool, I put it in the freezer so it would cool faster.
